The Owl and the Lemming

This adorable animation was written by Alootook Ipellie and directed by Co Hoedeman in 1971.

 Hoedeman was a Dutch filmaker who moved to Canada in 1965 to work for the National FIlm Board. 

In the early 70s he collaborated with artists in Canadian Eskimo communities to produce a series

 of animated films based on Inuit legends using sealskin figures, soapstone carvings, and drawings. 

The lovely puppets were designed by Germaine Arnaktauyok.

Sebastiano recently gave me for my birthday the beautiful catalog

of the 2005 Mart exhibition Il Bello e le bestie (Beauty and the beasts).

The volume displays a varied collection of art exploring the contamination 

of human and animal forms in imagery ranging from early mythical monsters 

to contemporary social satire. A fascinating selection, including the stunning 

Daniel Lee photograph below, which has inspired me to restore to life 

Animalarium's long-dormant homage to woman-animal hybrids 

with this proud pack of wintery creatures.

Bunnies, one of my favorite creatures in the soft and cute category,

are unfortunately inclined to suffer from depressive tendencies.

Just think of the famous Book of Bunny Suicides, or David Lynch's alienated Rabbits family.
